  • Crossing Jordan

23 May 2013 : It takes only about six hours to drive from the hilly far north to Jordan's southernmost extremity on the Red Sea. Home to 6.2 million people and largely desert (83%), this is indeed a small country, but it is jam-packed with attractions, from natural wonders like Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea to fascinating religious sites and a multi-layered history replete with remnants of majestic, long-passed civilisations.

  • FREEWHEELDividing the straddle

23 May 2013 : A couple of weeks ago I wrote about an all-mountain trail from the highlands of Phu Hin Rong Kla down the mountain to Ban Huai Nam Khao south of the national park. But that wasn't the only trail I rode during the trip with the filming crew of the Sua Nong Toh TV programme. The following day, we did another route. This time it was in the northern part of the park that straddles Phitsanulok and Loei provinces.

    Poles Apart

16 May 2013 : The spirit of rebirth is almost palpable as you walk the streets and hear the stories of Warsaw. Wiped off the map in the 19th century, reduced to ashes by German planes and panzers in 1939 and consigned to suspended animation during the four decades of repressive Stalinist rule that followed, this metropolis _ and the country of which it is capital _ has endured a succession of traumatic misfortunes that it has somehow survived, integrity intact, to reassert its proud identity in the 21st century.

    Where past and present co-exist

09 May 2013 : It is one of the capital's oldest districts, but mention its name to a foreign visitor and the first association will likely be with the bustling backpacker belt centred on Khao San Road. But to native Bangkokians and long-time residents, a reference to Bang Lamphu may summon up the gleaming-white image of Phra Sumen Fort, its crenellated ramparts dominating the Chao Phraya River and the approaches to Thon Buri, or make them long for Phra Arthit Road and its artsy little cafes or nostalgic for the time they first explored these winding streets and alleyways back when they were students at nearby Thammasat and Silpakorn universities.

Mountain biking in Nepal's Mustang valley

09 May 2013 : Thailand has some fantastic mountain bike trails and although my wife and I ride often, we know we've barely scratched the surface. Still, about once a year the urge to go and ride someplace else, with different trails, scenery and culture, becomes irresistible.
