Still waters a pipe dream?
Silence may be golden, but can it really be restored to an historic canal-side neighbourhood that's become something of a tourist draw?

As Chumpol Akkapantanon was telling a group of enthusiastic visitors how he converted a run-down canal-side wooden dwelling into a little cultural oasis dubbed Ban Silapin (Artist's House), he was constantly interrupted by the deafening clamour of long-tail tourist boats passing on Khlong Bangkok Yai.
Eye-catching fibre sculptures on the verandah of Ban Silapin are the tactic that makes the boatmen slow down their boats.
"People around here have learned to live with this noise," Chumpol observed, before continuing with his account. "Nobody is aware of their rights."
