Wat Suthat murals land US funding

The historic Ramayana murals at Wat Suthat Thepwararam are being preserved in document form under a project funded by the US Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP).

The project was proposed by Prof Peerapat Samran, a lecturer at Silpa-korn University's Faculty of Architecture. The lecturer visited the temple initially to study its architecture two years ago. He was charmed by the beauty of the 102 paintings, most of them in original condition but showing signs of wear and tear, displayed in the temple's ordination hall and saw the need to preserve them.

According to the lecturer, several paintings which are kept in gold-plated frames had sustained minor damage from cracking lines and other factors like humidity and insects.
