Shortly after dawn one fine morning during the cool season, a couple from Monaco climbed into a hot-air balloon in Doi Saket district, about 10km from downtown Chiang Mai. Then it was up, up, up to float over the countryside in their rainbow-coloured conveyance, feasting their eyes on the refreshing green expanse of rice fields dotted with villages and Buddhist temples.
Thanida Tangwanicharoen, 35, and Chavachol ‘Kong’ Setthaudom, 37, tied the knot during a ‘Million Water Lilies Wedding’ in Udon Thani after Thanida popped the question last Friday during a flight the pair were taking from Bangkok to Udon Thani.
Sometimes, when they were flying low enough, they could even make out people going about their everyday tasks. About an hour later, the balloon landed and the two passengers were served a special breakfast, complete with Champagne, and given a certificate testifying to their flight.
