Local guide Kittisak Sodama kept smiling at us during our visit to Tham Phothisat (Bodhisattva Cave) in the Nong Hin district of Loei, 520km northeast of Bangkok. By way of explanation, he said: “I am very proud that our Ban Thung Pho village has a tourist attraction.”

Kittisak used to play in and explore the limestone caves here when he was young, but always as part of a group.
