23 May 2013 : It takes only about six hours to drive from the hilly far north to Jordan's southernmost extremity on the Red Sea. Home to 6.2 million people and largely desert (83%), this is indeed a small country, but it is jam-packed with attractions, from natural wonders like Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea to fascinating religious sites and a multi-layered history replete with remnants of majestic, long-passed civilisations.

  • FREE WHEELDividing the straddle

23 May 2013 : A couple of weeks ago I wrote about an all-mountain trail from the highlands of Phu Hin Rong Kla down the mountain to Ban Huai Nam Khao south of the national park. But that wasn't the only trail I rode during the trip with the filming crew of the Sua Nong Toh TV programme. The following day, we did another route. This time it was in the northern part of the park that straddles Phitsanulok and Loei provinces.

  • Back to the future feline

09 May 2013 : I used to love Saturday mornings. It was the time when they broadcast Japanese cartoons on TV. One of my favourite series was Doraemon, about a 22nd century cat-like robot who travelled back in time to help a little boy named Nobita Nobi solve his problems by using amazing tools and gadgets from the future that the blue and white cat carried in a fourth-dimensional pocket on his tummy.

    Neglected neighbour

02 May 2013 : So close to Bangkok that it is invariably overlooked by day-trippers, Nakhon Pathom is neither an exotic nor a particularly exciting destination. What this town does have in bucketfuls, though, is a tranquil, laid-back atmosphere, good food at reasonable rates and a few spots that are so beautiful you'll probably want to make a return visit.

    Exploring the hidden track

02 May 2013 : I had visited Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park a number of times but I was never able to figure out the exact location of a scenic all-mountain trail that I heard about from some biking friends a couple of years ago.

  • On the right side of the tracks

02 May 2013 : Hundreds of passengers quietly hang around Bangkok's Hua Lamphong station. Some have waited for so long that they decide to sit on the floor because all the benches are occupied. Maids take a break and enjoy chatting in a quiet corner, out of their supervisor's sight.

  • Unveiling Antiquities

29 Apr 2013 : Princely drama and art nouveau blend exquisitely in Parusakawan Palace. Once the private abode of princes and a king, whose stories were characterised by romance, heartbreak and splendour, the palace is now open to the public as it houses the first police museum in the country. A visit to the palace is to marvel at one of Thailand's finest examples of architecture and an evocation of aristocratic nostalgia.

  • Mists of mystique

25 Apr 2013 : Fog blankets the Mon community in Sangkhla Buri district, on the Thailand-Myanmar border in Kanchanaburi province, before dawn breaks. Visitors with cameras poised stand on the famous Mon Bridge, the longest hand-made wooden bridge in Thailand, all preparing to shoot the scenic moments of the sun rising over the Songkalia River.

  • FREE WHEEL

Looping the loop (after a fashion)

25 Apr 2013 : On a recent trip I made to the North I had two "missions" in mind. One was the jaunt on Doi Inthanon which I wrote about the week before last. And the other was an epic - for me, anyway - ride from Chiang Mai to Lampang.
