The first fleet of luxury taxis was operational on Friday as an alternative for wealthy passengers.

Fifteen Mercedez Benz taxis joined the launch postponed from Wednesday but only five of them had been registered for public transport. The registration of the rest will be completed soon.

The Land Transport Department said it planned to increase the number to 100 within two months.

Department director-general Sanit Promwong said the service gave passengers a new option.

Fares start at 150 baht for the first two kilometres and 12 baht per km thereafter, except during a traffic jam, when the meter rises to six baht per minute.

The new taxi can be booked through Taxi OK app of the department, All Thai Taxi app, @allthaitaxi Line ID or call centre 0-2018-9799 of All Thai Taxi Co, which operates the fleet.
