True cuts price to maintain market lead

The fixed broadband internet segment is expected to reach maturity within the next few years, with around 80% of 21 million total households in the country having wired internet connections, according to True Online.

Mr Tanapoom said True Online has invested 60 million baht in marketing for its new package of 1Gbps at 899 baht.

The company, a subsidiary of True Corporation, has cut the price of its 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) high-speed internet package by nearly half to encourage existing customers to upgrade their packages as it competes with rivals and prepares for jousting in the run-up to 5G technology.

The move came after Advanced Info Service (AIS) Plc set a goal to become the No.1 player in the segment within three years. AIS currently ranks fourth in the market.

The top three players are True Online, 3BB and TOT.

"Thailand's fixed high-speed broadband has reached 50% of the 21 million households and it is expected to reach saturation with 80% penetration within 2-3 years," said Tanapoom Pakvisal, True Corporation's director and head of commercial for True Online.

In order to sustain its market leadership with 3.5 million customers, True Online invested 60 million baht in marketing for its new package of 1Gbps at 899 baht, he said.

Customers will be provided with True's Gigatex Fiber Router, valued at 3,900 baht, for free.

The router can support WiFi with a speed of 1Gbps.

Previously, the 1Gpbs package cost 1,599 baht a month and customers paid at least 4,000 baht for the router.

Around 60-70% of the company's new customers are expected to subscribe to the new package, said Mr Tanapoom. More than 60% of the firm's customers subscribe now to the monthly package of 200/100 megabit per second (Mbps).

True Online's revenue grew 11% to 12 billion baht from 2017 to 2018 and the same growth rate is expected this year, he said.

The overall fixed broadband market value is likely to rise 8-9% from 2018 to 2019.

He said broadband internet has become part of digital lifestyle, with households averaging 5-10 connected devices.

The 1Gbps internet package is expected to gather steam in the country within the next two years, said Mr Tanapoom.

True Online has a fibre broadband network that can reach as many as 15 million households and there is still room to grow, he said.
