Remote working has so many benefits, for employer, employee and the environment, more companies are turning on to it

The ability to work remotely has become increasingly popular in recent years as more and more professionals are moving away from the traditional office environment. Many now opt to take their work on the go, choosing their own preferred space to work in, which could be their home, co-working space, coffee shop, beach, mountain, abroad — essentially anywhere.

The idea is that they’re no longer confined to a single location, like their main office. No more 9-to-5 working routine at an office cubicle.

Instead, remote working would enable professionals — which include employees, freelancers and entrepreneurs — to operate on their own schedule. They can now work at the time and place where they can be most productive and creative, rather than to adhere to a certain schedule that may not work best with each person’s individual style.

Different developments today make remote working possible, and actually easier and more practical than one may think. Technology, for example, allows telecommuting to take flight. Members of the team can now utilise different applications and programmes to connect with one another and manage their schedule and deadlines regardless of their physical locations. This includes Thai people’s favourite communication app Line, which can be used for video calls and file sharing, among other functions, to keep the team informed and on the same page with one another. Countless applications on the market today allow for a more effective and efficient communication and productivity.

This shifting trend is also influenced by the development of co-working spaces, which provides facilities for professionals in different fields to come together, sharing and exchanging ideas in a friendly atmosphere.

These places often come with desks, meeting rooms, Wi-Fi, printer, photocopier, beanbags, on-site café and more.

Co-working spaces have been mushrooming in Bangkok, as well as different provinces like Chiang Mai, Krabi and beyond. Some of the well-known co-working spaces here include Hubba, Kliquedesk, The Hive and others. Many are generally charged by daily access, which starts from a few hundred baht per day.

Some also offer monthly membership plans for a more long-term use.

Leaving the traditional office setting behind can be very beneficial. It has been found that remote working is linked with higher productivity. Employees also have improved work-life balance, which comes with the increased flexibility in their line of work. They can save time and money from commuting long distance and wading through the traffic to and from their company’s office, and instead choose to work at home, or at a co-working space closer to home. In a sense, working remotely can reduce carbon footprints from car use and may just be a more environmentally-friendly mode of working.

Likewise, employers benefit from increased productivity of their remote staff members. They also save costs incurred from operating and maintaining a permanent office space. These benefits have resulted in more companies adopting remote working.
