World-class destinations OneSiam and ICONSIAM plan big events to mark Chinese New Year of the Rat to attract world tourists and boost economy

OneSiam and ICONSIAM – two of Thailand’s world-class destinations and centres for the Kingdom’s retail and tourism – have together set aside over 100 million baht to prepare for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations in 2020.

The goal is to encourage spending and boost the economy. Big events are being brought about for Thai shoppers and foreign visitors to experience the grandeur of the Chinese New Year festival in Thailand. OneSiam plans full-scale celebrations at Siam Paragon, Siam Center and Siam Discovery, with its campaign “OneSiam Chinese New Year 2020: The Light of Prosperity”. ICONSIAM has come up with its campaign “The ICONSIAM Eternal Prosperity Chinese New Year 2020”.

OneSiam Chinese New Year 2020: The Light of Prosperity

Mayuree Chaipromprasith, Siam Piwat Co., Ltd.’s Senior Executive Vice President for Marketing, said that in order to greet the Chinese Year of the Rat in a big way, OneSiam has brought about a magical campaign called “OneSiam Chinese New Year 2020: The Light of Prosperity”. To welcome Thais of Chinese descent and tourists from around the world, she said, OneSiam this year has spent more than 50 million baht to create a new shopping experience that will be colourful and unprecedented. “Selections of hard-to-find products from every corner of the world, along with state-of-the-art communication innovations, will take turn to please our customers,” she said. Store-wide decorations and embellishments are expected to encourage shopping significantly during the festival. “We are confident OneSiam remains one of the main destinations for tourists visiting Bangkok.”

An estimated 40.5-40.9 million tourists are expected to visit Thailand in 2020, an increase of 2.0%-3.0%, according to Kasikorn Research Center. Most of the foreign visitors will be from Asian countries travelling amid the dominant trend of seeking new experiences. Tourist spending in Thailand this year is expected to reach 1.97-1.99 trillion baht, an increase of 1.4% to 2.5% from 2019.

Siam Paragon has prepared special dance performances called “Siam Paragon Chinese New Year 2020: The Infinite Prosperity”. These exciting shows by Dalian Acrobatic Troupe and Guangzhou Acrobatic Troupe are specially imported from China. Also, there will be a lion dance that features as many as 99 lions, to be performed by the Look Chai Mongkol dragon and lion dance troupe, which are three-time winners of trophies presented by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, in addition to numerous other prizes from local and overseas competitions. A special surprise during the opening ceremony on 23 January will be an appearance by actor Pakorn “Boy” Chatborirak and actress Sirin “Chippy” Preediyanon. There will also be daily stage shows by leading stars during the Chinese New Year celebrations at Siam Paragon.

Siam Center, a haven of trendy ideas, is coming up with an ultramodern event to bring in an auspicious beginning of the year with “Siam Center Celebrates the Year of the Rat”. To start Chinese New Year auspiciously in such a way as to ensure luck throughout 2020, Siam Center creates a “Prosperous Siam” zone to boost the chances of wealth and luck in a unique style. In particular, Siam Center is collaborating with calligraphy artist Sorravis Prakong, who is known for his unique style of lettering and modern calligraphy. Plus many more activities held to strengthen fortune and boost luck between 22 and 26 January at Siam Center.

Siam Discovery – The Exploratorium greets the Chinese New Year by holding “Siam Discovery Chinese Street Food 2020” featuring at least 16 famous food shops with “lucky dishes”. Plus activities to mark the Chinese New Year with an ancient Shanghai atmosphere from 19 to 29 January at Discovery Plaza, Siam Discovery.

The ICONSIAM Eternal Prosperity Chinese New Year 2020

Supoj Chaiwatsirikul, Managing Director of ICONSIAM Co Ltd, said that ICONSIAM has joined forces with the Culture Ministry, Department of Cultural Promotion, Chinese Opera Society, China Cultural Center, Citibank and Air Asia in celebrating the upcoming Chinese New Year with a big event. The ICONSIAM Eternal Prosperity Chinese New Year 2020 will be held between 22 and 26 January this year at ICONSIAM on Charoen Krung Road. A world-class magnificence comes directly from the Land of the Red Dragon. An image of the Green Dragon God from Qinglong Temple in Shantou city of China’s Guangdong province is brought to Thailand, at ICONSIAM in particular, for the locals and Thais of the Chinese descent to worship and seek blessings. Besides, Siam Takashimaya has a special campaign to celebrate the Chinese New Year as well.

The big events celebrating the Chinese New Year are expected to increase the arrivals of Thai customers and foreign tourists shopping at OneSiam and ICONSIAM by 10%-15%.
