60 years of PEA “Brightness for Life Quality”

The Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) celebrates its 60th anniversary on 28 September 2020. Since 1960

PEA has laid the infrastructure of electricity distribution systems to cover 74 areas for which it is responsible across the country, not including Bangkok, Nonthaburi and Samut Prakan. It has continually developed a better electricity system to promote stability and support Thailand’s economic and industrial expansion.

Today, PEA has adopted modern technology for its electrical and information systems in order to provide international standard services.

Mr. Sompong Preeprem, Governor, Provincial Electricity Authority, stated: “Over the past 60 years, PEA has provided electricity and related services in response to customers’ requirements with responsibility for society and the environment. PEA is a leading regional organisation driven by technology, creativity, innovation and new businesses. It has developed working processes to cope with the digital era and provided modern and reliable electricity in compliance with users who need quick and efficient services.

PEA’s important projects

One Province, One Road Power Cable System: PEA has set up a plan to promote the One Province, One Road underground power cable system (2020-2024) to commemorate His Majesty the King.

Delivery and Distribution Development Project: PEA has implemented the Delivery and Distribution Development Project, Phase 2, to improve power supply capacity. The 77,334-million baht project was approved by the Cabinet on 26 May 2020 to cover the construction of 69 power stations, improvement of 22 power stations and construction and enhancement of high-voltage and low-voltage power distribution systems.

Distribution System Improvement Project: PEA has improved the low-voltage distribution system to reduce the voltage drip problem. Since January 2020, there have been no complaints about voltage drip. PEA has also revised the regulation to expand electricity user zones, reduce electricity application fees to new users by 40%-64%, and reduce TOU (Time of Use) rate by more than 50%.

Electricity Development Project: PEA has developed the Micro Grid electricity network on Koh Phaluai, Surat Thani, by using Off Grid solar power to disconnect the main on-shore power grid.

PEA’s social projects

Communications Line Arrangement Project: PEA has removed all inactive cables (dead wires) and organised electricity lines into the “Con” in the specified areas, covering 3,891 critical routes. 99% of the project has been completed. PEA has also organised communications lines in commercial, municipal, and important areas as well as tourist attraction sites.

One Tambol, One Electrician Project: PEA has promoted and developed local indoor electricians to meet the national labour standard, aiming at increasing their revenues. Staff from the Provincial Electricity Authority have been sent as tutors to train local electricians to increase efficiency of the services to the general public and reduce restrictions of indoor electricity systems. The five-year project starting in 2017 has already trained more than 5,500 district electricians who registered with the PEA. The general public can call for services through the PEA Care & Service Application.

PEA Encourages Renewable Energy for Community Enterprise Project: PEA has utilised renewable energy for communities to promote self-reliance and careers. This includes appropriate renewable energy management such as solar energy utilisation to produce quality products to earn more revenue while helping reduce expenditures in their communities. Since 2016, a total of 11 communities have participated in the project.

Corporate Direction for the Future

PEA Digital Utility: PEA led by Mr. Sonpong Preeprem, PEA Governor, has become a digital utility organisation to encourage transition of the electricity industry by using Electrification Decentralisation and Digitalisation (E2D) to amend the process and structure of the organisation. Today, PEA as a digital organisation has implemented digital technology to give correct and accurate operations for the electricity system and services in response to customers’ needs.

Micro Grid Project: PEA has implemented the Micro Grid system for the first time in Thailand by installing a lithium ion battery storage system at Amphoe Mae Sariang to promote stability in the electricity system. Micro Grid system has supplied electricity for Mae Sariang, Sop Moei and Mae La Noi districts in Mae Hong Son Province. The system can supply electricity independently without linking to the former electricity network system.

PEA VOLTA Application: PEA has installed a total of 62 charging stations for electric vehicles across the country, comprising one station every 100 km along the main routes to facilitate electric vehicle users to have quick and efficient services. Electric vehicle users can use the navigator system to find a charging station, check the status and reserve a place in the queue via the PEA VOLTA application. Prepaid service is available.

PEA aims to become a "Digital Utility" organisation by upgrading from electricity system to digital electricity system, connecting customers with the use of technologies, changing into a modern organisation, strengthening the workforce for the future, developing digital platforms, and driving technology and innovation for prosperity of the economy, society and environment. PEA also aims to provide stable and safe electricity for all households in its areas (100%) across the country under the slogan “Brightness for Life Quality”.
