The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) wants authorities to step up efforts to amend the controversial charter to find a way out of political turbulence threatening plans to restore the economy.

All sides, including pro-democracy protesters, the Prayut Chan-o-cha administration and politicians from coalition and opposition parties, must bring their conflict to the negotiating table for the sake of the economy, which continues to reel from the pandemic, the FTI said yesterday.

The 2017 constitution, Thailand's 20th iteration, has some sections the protesters feel are controversial, allegedly helping Gen Prayut prolong his power after the 2014 coup. Charter amendment is one of the demands of the protesters, who also want Gen Prayut to step down.

"The FTI wants a special parliamentary session to debate and settle the escalating political unrest," FTI chairman Supant Mongkolsuthree said. "The government should not turn a deaf ear to all voices."

The federation is worried the ongoing demonstration will affect attempts to cure the ailing economy and dampen business confidence, which has showed sign of improving, following lockdown easing.

Yesterday the FTI reported Thailand Industrial Sentiment Index in September continued to increase for five consecutive months to 85.2 points, from 84 points.

The increase came partially from economic stimulus packages and some improvements in exports after foreign trade partners eased their lockdown orders.

The index is based on a survey of 1,301 enterprises in 45 industrial sectors in September.
