DTAC's 2020 revenue drops 2.9%

Total Access Communication (DTAC), the third biggest mobile operator in Thailand by subscribers, reported a 2.9% year-on-year revenue drop to 78.8 billion baht in 2020, weighed down by the protracted pandemic.

According to the company's financial statement to the Stock Exchange of Thailand, revenue of its core services, defined as bundle of voice and data, fell 2.2% year-on-year to 56.7 billion baht in 2020.

The fall was attributed to the "prolonged economic impact of Covid-19 and intense competition in prepaid", the company said.

Handset and starter kit sales amounted to 6.9 billion baht, down 19.1% year-on-year, due to closure of shops in the second quarter of 2020 and lower units sold as a result of customer spending optimisation.

International roaming revenue saw a 67% year-on-year decline to 274 million baht, which DTAC said resulted from international travel restrictions from the second quarter of last year through the rest of the year.

DTAC's net profit fell 5.8% year-on-year to 5.1 billion baht in 2020.

However, total subscriber base stood at 18.9 million at the end of 2020, an increase of 173,000 from the end of the third quarter following "gradual recovery in the Thai mass segment and better churn management", DTAC said.

Postpaid users account for 32.4% of the total subscriber base. Nevertheless, total subscriber base declined 1.8 million from the end of 2019, mostly due to the loss of prepaid users.
