City University of Hong Kong (CityU), ranked 48th in the QS World University Rankings, is a young, dynamic, internationally focused institution that has developed into one of the world’s top universities. On the 24th of April CityU will host a Virtual Open Day with speakers of Thai available to assist and below we would like to provide you with a brief overview of the great opportunities available here for Thai students.

Located in the heart of Hong Kong, Asia’s World City, we welcome students from over 80 countries and regions around the world to a truly international campus where more than 70% of our faculty are international. With English, Cantonese, and Mandarin spoken throughout Hong Kong, there are many great opportunities to learn a new language here. In CityU, we provide many language-specific courses but for all other courses English is the language of instruction. One of our Thai students, On-mongkol, has the following to say about our international approach. “The classes are designed for students to gain international experience through group projects and class discussions. The medium of instruction is in English, which eases communication in class. In my first semester, I took Survival Cantonese, organised by the Global Engagement Office. Cantonese is definitely a great language to learn and it is also a great way to learn about a new culture.”

A City of Contrasts

The image of Hong Kong that most readily springs to mind is a city full of skyscrapers, and although this is partly true (Hong Kong has more skyscrapers than any other city in the world) the region is teeming with natural splendour too.  This city of contrasts is what On-mongkol finds fascinating. “Being an international city, Hong Kong uniquely incorporates the fusion of people from the east and the west.” Nichapat, Vice President of the Thai Student Association, also agrees with the contrasting elements of Hong Kong. “Hong Kong gives us the balance between the urban environment and the natural environment. Whether you crave the city that never sleeps, the fancy skyscrapers or just the mountains and beaches, Hong Kong has them all to offer.”

A Global Campus

Our International Friends Club (IFC) provides an integrative and welcoming hub for all of our international students. Our IFC buddies are a fantastic mix of local and international students who act as local guides, organise social events, and generally help students navigate the intricacies of international academic exchange.  Eva, a Biomedical Science student from America, recently began her studies in CityU and thoroughly enjoys the intercultural environment. “Being at CityU, I get to meet people from all over the world. Many of my friends are international students, and we love learning about each other's home countries. We do movie nights, explore Hong Kong, and eat a lot of good food. As part of the International Friends Club, I get to meet up with other students to do fun activities around the city.”

International Exchange and Internship Opportunities

With more than 400 international higher education partners around the globe, we encourage all our students to avail themselves of an international experience, whether that be a semester abroad, a summer abroad, or an international internship. In the summer of 2019, On-mongkol completed a Korean language programme at Ewha Women’s University in Seoul, South Korea. “I met a lot of new friends from around the world and got to learn the Korean culture in the country itself, through a hands-on experience. Classes were almost every day and a lot of activities were arranged by the university, such as a Korean cooking class, some games and interesting tours.”

CityU’s Global Work Attachment Programme provides international internship opportunities for our students. Nichapat took up an internship in a marketing agency based in Sydney, Australia. “This programme is organised and subsidised by the City University, and it allowed me to spend 10 weeks living in Australia. In addition to learning various aspects about the role of a digital marketer, the international experience itself was just as rewarding.”

International Joint Bachelor’s Degree Programs

We are particularly proud of our international Joint Bachelor’s Degree (JBD) programs with our esteemed partner universities. Students eligible for our JBD program can complete their undergraduate studies with two degrees from two world-class universities. We currently have JBD programs with Columbia University (USA), National Taiwan University (Taiwan), Leuphana University of Lüneberg (Germany), the University of Edinburgh (UK), and the University of Manchester (UK).  Liam, a South African alumnus, successfully graduated from the CityU and Columbia JBD and now works in renewable energy investment banking. He mentions that establishing global friendships has been one of the highlights of the JBD program. “Columbia and City U are, by nature, cosmopolitan and international, so I have been able to make meaningful relationships across the globe.”
