National Telecom (NT) has joined hands with AJ Advance Technology (AJA) Plc to support the government's smart city project through 5G use cases, Alibaba cloud technology and 26-gigahertz spectrum range for the 5G network.

The two firms signed a three-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the collaboration under the smart city development project last week, the event witnessed by Digital Economy and Society (DES) Minister Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn.

Through the agreement, NT acting president Group Captain Somsak Khaosuwan said NT, which holds a 5G licence for the 26GHz range, will provide the network capacity to support connections of all related devices and solutions under the smart city project.

AJA, a distributor of Alibaba cloud solutions, is responsible for developing a smart city operating system through Alibaba cloud technology in response to consumer needs.

The two parties will collaborate to provide necessary information to the government agencies regarding products and services which have been developed under the smart city project.

Gp Capt Somsak said the MoU signing is part of the move to support the government's policy to promote technology development in the country.

It is also in line with the government's national strategy aimed at levelling up the country's digital infrastructure, he said.

NT serves as a potential digital and telecom infrastructure provider with spectrum ranges, telecom towers and fibre optic cables, Gp Capt Somsak said.

Pichai Panjasanka, chief executive of AJA, said the smart city development project through 5G infrastructure and innovative platforms will help enhance the country's competitiveness and prepare both public and private sectors for the new economy.

At present, the DES minister serves as chairman of the National Smart City Steering sub-committee, responsible for pushing related agencies to accelerate the smart city project development.

The goal for smart city transformation covers seven dimensions -- economy, mobility, energy, living, people, governance and the environment.

There are five categories for smart city consideration.

First, they must have a clear geographical boundary.

Second, they need to have infrastructure investment and development plans. Third, they have to design an open and secure city data platform.

Fourth, they must have a sustainable management model. Finally, they need to come up with smart city solutions in any or all of the seven dimensions.
