IEAT to launch carbon neutral project

The Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) plans to carry out a "Carbon Neutral Industrial Estate" project at Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate in Rayong, as part of Thai-Japanese cooperation to fight climate change.

The IEAT will team up with four Thai and Japanese companies to jointly conduct a feasibility study of the project, covering clean energy infrastructure development, zero emission vehicles, as well as production, and the use and storage of renewable energy, according to their memorandum of understanding.

They also plan to demonstrate the use of hydrogen fuel in the industrial estate, according to the IEAT.

"The IEAT aims to level up industrial estate standards in the Eastern Economic Corridor [EEC] and Smart Park," said IEAT governor Veeris Ammarapala.

Smart Park, located on 1,383 rai in Rayong, is being developed to serve S-curve industries in the EEC area.

Mr Veeris said the Carbon Neutral Industrial Estate is also in line with the government's bio-, circular and green (BCG) economic model, which promotes wise use of resources with minimal or no impact on the environment.

Carbon neutrality refers to global efforts to make a balance between carbon dioxide emission and absorption to reduce global warming.

Among the clean energy targeted in the study is hydrogen. The IEAT says when hydrogen is used to generate electricity it emits nothing but water.

The study is based on cooperation between the IEAT, Bangkok Industrial Gas Co, PTT Group, PTT Global Chemical Plc and Toyota Motor Thailand.

Nashida Kazuya, Japanese ambassador to Thailand, said Japan is the largest investor in Thailand so it should play a major role in helping the country carry out a carbon neutrality campaign in the industrial sector.

"Decarbonisation will help support Thai economic growth and pave the way for hydrogen value chain development in Asean," he said.

Yamashita Noriaki, president of Toyota Motor Thailand, said his firm was eager to use its expertise and technologies to help Thailand move towards the carbon neutrality goal.
