The Thai economic recovery is not expected to be greatly affected if the world goes into recession next year, says Finance Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith.

He said that the country's economy is gradually recovering, driven by the export and tourism sectors, coupled with expanding domestic consumption.

Some local economists have forecast that the global economy is entering a recession which will certainly affect Thailand. One current sign of the impact is that Thailand's export growth has started to decline.

Mr Arkhom said that even if the world does enter a recession next year, it does not mean that every country will suffer a downturn.

He added that Thailand's tourism sector stands to benefit from the reopening of countries which had closed their borders over the past two years to deal with the pandemic.

Meanwhile, Mr Arkhom on Monday presided over a signing ceremony between the Finance Ministry, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Digital Government Development Agency, to provide an online channel through which companies can obtain securities business licences.

They will be the first electronic licences to be issued by the Finance Ministry.

Mr Arkhom added that these parties would try to launch this e-licensing channel before Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation finance ministers meet between Oct 19-21.

The ministry is also in talks with other state agencies regarding the launch of other types of e-licences next year, Mr Arkhom added.
