SURAT THANI: International arrivals to the southern resort province have exceeded 1.5 million, up 155% so far this year, according to the provincial governor.

Governor Witchawut Jinto said on Monday 2.05 million visitors have arrived in the province since January. Of them, 1.5 million are foreign visitors, representing a 155% increase from the same period last year.

The foreign visitors generated revenue of 35.9 billion baht, up 159% year on year.

The governor said foreign visitors spend their money mostly on accommodation, meals, souvenirs, entertainment activities and transportation.

The hotel occupancy rate since the beginning of the year is around 77%, an increase of 39% from the same period last year. Each foreign visitor spends on average 4.8 nights in the province.

Mr Witchawut said Surat Thani, abundant in marine and ecological attractions, remains one of the favourite destinations for international tourists. Prices are also competitive for visitors.

Koh Samui, one of the country's most popular island attractions, has welcomed more cruises from Europe, the US and within Asia since the easing of the pandemic. Flights have also increased during the holidays and weekends.

Koh Phangan remains highly popular with foreign tourists, who make up about 90% of visitors drawn to the Full Moon parties there, according to the governor.
