Jasmine rice store price to rise

The retail price of Jasmine rice will go up by at least 10 baht per five-kilogramme pack after the Songkran holiday, Thai Rice Packers Association president Somkiat Makcayathorn said Friday.

Mr Somkiat said the price had to increase because of higher costs of raw materials and fuel along with the government's plan to increase the daily minimum wage to 300 baht.

He said the price of ordinary white rice would not be changed at this time because farmers would harvest their second crop in April and May and a large amount of rice would enter the market.

He said the amount of rice currently in the market was not in line with market forces because of the government's rice mortgage scheme.
