Established as a coal-mining venture in Thailand in the early 1980s, Banpu has since expanded into Indonesia and China. In 2009 Banpu sold around 21 million tons of coal from existing assets. One of Asia’s leading coal producers, at the end of 2009 the company had total attributable coal resources of around 2,280 million tons, while its coal reserves were approximately 606 million tons.
Banpu has extensive experience developing successful power projects in Thailand and intends to use this expertise to develop coal-fired power projects in other Asian countries, where possible creating synergies with Banpu’s coal-mining business.
Banpu has been a pioneer in greenfield private power plant development in Thailand. It was the first company to respond when Thailand liberalized its power sector, via the formation of Cogeneration Company Limited in 1993 under the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand’s ‘SPP’ scheme launched in 1991.
Banpu aims to focus on power investments which are complementary and synergistic with its coal-mining business. The company is proactively assessing new coal-fired investment opportunities in Thailand, Indonesia, China and other Asian countries.
