SET retreats after failing to stay above 1,700

The Stock Exchange of Thailand continued to test 1,700 for the second trading day on Monday but retreated after failing to stand above the key level last seen in 1994.

The index reached an all-time high when it closed at 1,753.73 on Jan 4, 1994, three years before the financial crisis.

On Monday, the SET closed down 3.75 points, or 0.22%, to 1,692.22. After opening at 1,700.13, the index continued to slide. It briefly made the day’s high at 1,700.17 at 11.53am before plunging to close the day at the low of 1,691.82.

It was the second trading day the main index tested the key level.  

Total trading value was 47.9 billion baht, with 22.3 billion shares changed hands.

SET50 index retreated 0.17%, or 1.81 points, to 1,079.82 in trade worth 47.9 billion baht.

MAI dropped 0.70%, or 4.01 points, to 570.93 in transactions worth 2.9 billion baht.

Foreigners bought a net 702.9 billion baht, followed by individual investors (39.4 million). Brokers sold 485.9 million, followed by institutional investors (259.5 million baht).

Year-to-date, institutional investors were net buyers of 63.2 billion baht, followed by brokers (10.8 billion) and foreigners (12.3 billion baht). Individual investors sold 86.3 billion baht.
