SET poised to break all-time record

SET50 now at all-time high

The Stock Exchange of Thailand closed up 0.83% or 14.19 points to 1,726.67 on Monday, the second highest close after a record set on Jan 4, 1994.

The SET index hit an all-time high 23 years ago on that day, when it closed at 1,753.73 after briefly touching 1,789 at one point.

Total trading value was 66.9 billion baht, with 16.9 billion shares changed hands.

The SET50 index already set a record on Monday, jumping 1.02%, or 11.16 points, to 1,105.49 in trade worth 36.8 billion baht.

The index of 50 companies with the largest market capitalisation in the 42-year-old stock exchange was introduced in mid-August 1995. The previous record was 1,096.29 in May 2013.

MAI climbed 0.05%, or 0.31 points, to 570.10 in transactions worth 2.1 billion baht.

Optimism prevailed after the prime minister affirmed last week a time frame for the general election in November next year.

Foreigners were net buyers of 1.2 billion baht worth of shares, followed by local institutions (861.6 million baht) and brokers (265.3 million baht). Individual investors sold 2.4 billion baht.

Year-to-date, institutional investors were net buyers of 65.8 billion baht, followed by foreigners (17.9 billion baht) and brokers (13.3 billion baht). Retail investors were sole net sellers of 97 billion baht.
