The transformation of the 24-hour Talat Tong Paed into a cashless food centre is part of the bank’s “Pao Tung” campaign to promote cashless markets using QR code as the mode of payment.

Customers need to install a mobile banking application of their banks on their cell phones.

Vendors are required to have a PromptPay account with Krungthai Bank, which will prepare a QR code for their account to be placed in their shops.

To pay, a customer opens their mobile banking app and use it to scan the barcode of the vendor. He can check the name of the shop whether it’s the correct before typing the amount and confirm. He can also add a personal note for reference.

Among the shops are those selling rice with pork’s leg, Hainanese chicken, roasted duck, pork soup and a la carte dishes, among others. (continued below)

"Tong Paed is the first market where all vendors participate in our programme. The vendors received a training and customers are keen to try since they can make payment from one baht with no fee,” said Pilaiporn Leemuadpai, manager of the bank’s Khon Kaen Zone 1 office.

She added elsewhere in Muang district, vendors were enthusiastic about the programme, with 500 already applying.

“For the entire province, 1,000 vendors in all 26 districts have participated. We will continue to expand the service to help turn Khon Kaen into a smart city,” she said.
