Soneva Kiri Koh Kood, the resort chain founded by Indian-British hotelier Sonu Shivdasani, is penetrating more high-end markets, especially in Asia.

"Soneva Kiri on Koh Kut continues to grow from both European markets and the regional market," said Mr Shivdasani, who is also former founder and chief executive of Six Senses hotels and resorts.

He is seeing more demand from Asia penetrating regional markets, especially Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, China and the domestic market.

According to the hotel's rates set for Dec 20, 2016 to Dec 17, 2017, the best price was US$905 (29,865 baht) for a bay-view pool villa suite during low season. The most expensive rate was $22,220 (733,260 baht) during peak season for a private cliff pool with six bedrooms.

As of Nov 2, agoda.com is offering four rooms starting at 38,948 baht for bay view pool villa suites and up to 90,919 baht for a two-bedroom suite with a pool view.

Shivdasani: U-tapao to strengthen business

The top markets are tourists from Thailand, the UK, China, Germany and Nordic regions.

The hotel refused to share average occupancy rates for the current period or projections for the coming peak season.

Soneva Kiri comprises 35 vast pool villas on the beach, hillside or clifftop, all overlooking the Gulf of Thailand.

Mr Shivdasani said luxury hotels in Thailand are beginning to incorporate sustainable initiatives and give back to the community as travellers look for unique experiences that are slightly removed from the tourist trail.

"U-tapao airport in Rayong province, which recently opened commercially and is being expanded for the government's Eastern Economic Corridor initiative, should strengthen travel business in eastern Thailand. This is a step in the right direction," he said.

Bangkok airports are becoming crowded, said Mr Shivdasani. The country needs another gateway airport and the government should incentivise airlines to fly into U-tapao, he said, as just making it international will not be sufficient.

Soneva Kiri has invited live musicians and talented chefs for Christmas and the New Year celebrations, and will be holding New Year's Eve Journey, which takes guests on a food and entertainment expedition around the entire resort.

The hotel is also planning for Chinese New Year, Easter and Songkran.

Soneva's worldwide philosophy is to distinguishing itself by providing space, privacy and showing how sustainable materials can be aesthetically pleasing.

"Our guests to feel at home without the worries and obligations of their everyday lives," said Mr Shivdasani.
