Technology, medical gear lead rising stars

Tech-related segments such as digital devices, medical equipment and e-commerce are tipped for gains next year, says a survey by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC).

The trend is due to urbanisation and the government's strong promotion of technology at a time when the country is becoming an ageing society, said UTCC president Saowanee Thairungroj.

One rising star for 2018 is production of mobile and telecom-related gear as more people live their lives online, she said.

Another is wellness and medical services, with Thais requiring more medical care as the population ages.

A third is e-commerce, with more consumers choosing to shop online, and cosmetics and beauty products are set for strong demand as purchasing power improves.

"People have changed their lifestyle to do most of their activities online at a time that the government is lending full support to Thailand 4.0, which includes technology related to mobile and digital equipment and networks," Ms Saowanee said.

Despite the rising trend, risks remain for these growing sectors.

"The key risk is that technology changes rapidly and those who are in rising-star businesses need to adjust to match the changing situation, particularly those in the mobile business," Ms Saowanee said.

There should be many players in mobile and tech as competition escalates, she said.

In contrast, sunset businesses such as printing, handicrafts, mining and CD/DVD making will continue their slow decline.

Some businesses could adapt to survive, such as handicraft makers who develop an online presence to reach more consumers, Ms Saowanee said.
