Partnerships to drive sales of halal items

Thai partnerships with Malaysian food producers will generate 200 million baht in 2018, 74% more than last year, according to the National Food Institute (NFI).

Thailand's halal food market will surge on the back of Malaysian food producers' investments, said NFI president Yongvut Saovapruk.

There are 164 business partners from 23 companies supplying halal food to Thailand, according to the institute.

Last year, 10 Thai halal food producers and 60 associated business partners injected 52 million baht into the industry after joining the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS).

The event brings together producers from 21 countries and draws more than 23,000 visitors a day.

The NFI encouraged small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to join MIHAS 2018, which runs April 4-7 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre.

The NFI is a government agency under the Industry Ministry that supports technology and marketing development of Thai food producers.

"Thai dried fruits, processed rice items, canned tuna and drinks are popular in Malaysia," Mr Yongvut said. "The showcase is an opportunity for Thai SME and Thai halal food producers to distribute their products in other Muslim countries."

The Industry Ministry has a five-year plan (2016-20) to develop the halal food industry, aiming to make Thailand one of the world's top five exporters of such products.

Thailand is currently the world's 10th-largest halal food exporter, with more than 200 billion baht worth of products sold in overseas markets.

The government expects Thai food exports to rise by 7% year-on-year to 1.07 trillion baht this year, driven by the global economic recovery.

"Thai halal food products have grown at an average of 8% a year since 2010, thanks to rising global demand and Thailand's role as a key food exporter," Mr Yongvut said.

The global Muslim market is expected to expand to 2.8 billion people in 2050, up from 1.7 billion today.

The ministry is pushing Thailand's deep South as a hub for halal food.
