Commerce Ministry wants more SMEs to get in export game

The Commerce Ministry aims to upgrade the export capability of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and local entrepreneurs, as well as develop young smart farmers.

The Commerce Ministry's Thaitrade.com is an online marketplace supporting SMEs.

The ministry is also committed to promoting service business more aggressively and continuing to tap emerging and niche markets.

According to Commerce Minister Sontirat Sontijirawong, the policies will be delivered to the ministry's high-ranking officials and international commercial counsellors on Oct 16.

The ministry is also scheduled to hold a joint meeting of trade officials and international commercial counsellors to be chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak on Oct 18.

At the meeting, officials will evaluate the export outlook and adjust the 8% growth forecast if needed.

"Next year's policy will be run under the Local Go Global concept, by which local SMEs and local entrepreneurs will be upgraded and promoted to have a greater chance for export," Mr Sontirat said. "Banjongjitt Angsusingh, director-general of the International Trade Promotion Department, has also already agreed on the push and is ready to dispatch the department's officials to help provide advice on production, product development, export and marketing knowledge."

He said the ministry next year will rev up the online distribution channel for Thai businesses, particularly through the use of Thaitrade.com, the country's national e-marketplace, to increase volume.

The ministry set up Thaitrade.com seven years ago. The site now features more than 200,000 products and attracts 2.15 million foreign visitors annually.

In 2016 the ministry launched Thaitrade.com Sook (small order OK), a B2C (business-to-consumer) extension of Thaitrade.com.

Some 23,000 entrepreneurs now use Thaitrade.com.

The ministry has set its sights on persuading 100,000 entrepreneurs to use the national e-commerce platform to increase their exports.

Partnerships are being sought with renowned international e-commerce firms in the US, Europe, China, India, Africa and the Middle East via the B2B (business-to-business) e-marketplace.

The goal is to export as many Thai products as possible through the online channel and raise transaction value on the national e-commerce platform by 1 billion baht to reach 5.5 billion this year.

The Thai e-commerce market was valued at 2.8 trillion baht in 2017, up 9.9% year-on-year.

B2B represented 1.67 trillion baht or 59.6% of the total, while B2C made up 812 billion or 28.9%.

B2G (business-to-government) generated 324 billion baht or 11.6%, according to the Electronic Transactions Development Agency.

Thailand's e-commerce value is predicted to top 5 trillion baht by 2021, reported the agency.

According to Mr Sontirat, the ministry plans to extend its partnership with other e-marketplace providers such as Tmall.com in China, eBay and Amazon in the US and Europe, Gosoko in Africa, and B2Brazil.

The ministry also aims to link the payment system, logistic services and digital market via Google and Facebook, he said.

The ministry hopes to promote overseas investment, especially for service businesses such as health care for the elderly, hospitals, spas, restaurants, hotel management and contractors deemed ready to expand overseas.
