NBTC vouches for 5G to revive economy with technology

In the age of the Internet of Things (IoT), where electronic devices connect and share information online, it is undeniable that the development of 5G technology is crucial. Therefore, Office of The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) is determined to establish 5G network in Thailand to boost the national economy and efficiently prepare the country for the upcoming ageing society.

In order to have 5G readily available, three main factors are to be developed. Firstly, Spectrum must be able to support faster data transfer through its network. Hence, NBTC will put 700 MHz and 2600 MHz frequencies up for auction to provide the service in the near future. The second factor is Infrastructure. More data and faster 5G connectivity, more bandwidth the infrastructure needs to have. Insufficient bandwidth would prevent 5G from reaching its full potential. Therefore, investment from the private sector will enhance efficiency and accelerate coverage expansion. Lastly, well-developed Connectivity for 5G will mean an easy-to-use, convefnient, extensive network that connects with multiple types of IoT and AI devices.

Nationwide, a competent 5G network will open up considerable economic opportunities for Thailand. As such, the implication without it could make Thailand experience substantial loss. NBTC has estimated the potential economic loss to be as high as 2.3 trillion baht by 2030, which is expected to be the year 5G will have most impact on the country’s economy. The number is equivalent to 20 percent of Thailand’s current GDP and the industrial production that requires machinery and technology will be the most damaged sector.

In addition to economic loss in the industry sector, healthcare will also be affected. In 15 years, Thailand is expected to have 20 million senior citizens. Introducing 5G to aid distant treatment or telemedicine could reduce the number of doctor visits for general diagnosis by 5.5 percent per year equal to approximately 12-15 million visits to Thai hospitals, thus saving patient’s time and a minimum of 11,000 million baht per year.

NBTC’s push for 5G network to be available by 2020-2021 is part of a roadmap to strengthen the nation’s economy and improve Thai people’s quality of life in every aspect.
