The new design of Suvarnabhumi airport's Terminal 2 will have its luggage conveyor belt system and automated passenger transport linked with the first terminal, Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT) says.
The decision was made by the Airport Consultants Council, which comprises experts from various sectors, said AoT president Nitinai Sirismatthakarn, president of AoT.
This differs from the first design, which was created from a stand-alone concept, he said.
"The AoT recently sought the Transport Ministry's approval to move the project forward," Mr Nitinai said, adding the 42-billion-baht scheme is likely to be forwarded to the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) for approval in the near future.
The project is needed to boost service quality of the airport and cater to tourism, the AoT president said.
The first design of Terminal 2 was created by DBALP Consortium and headed by local architect Duangrit Bunnag.
The consortium won the design competition on Aug 22 last year.
However, the AoT decided to drop the winning design early this year, arguing it may not sufficiently cater to the needs of those using the terminal.
According to Mr Nitinai, once the scheme is approved by the NESDB, the AoT will have to call a new bidding for construction design.
It remains unclear whether the bid winner would be announced by this year, he said.
