Bangkok was the second most popular international destination for Chinese tourists for the Lunar New Year, trailing only Taiwan, according to data from Airbnb.

Thai Airbnb hosts received 186 million baht in income this Chinese New Year from 44,000 guests, a 50% jump from the period last year.

A typical host earned 43,000 baht during the eight days surrounding the Lunar New Year travel season.

Globally, Airbnb saw 100% growth in guest arrivals from China during the Chinese New Year.

The holiday is described as the world's largest annual human migration, as mainland Chinese tourists flock out of the country for vacations abroad. Chinese tourists visited Airbnbs in 1,048 cities in 111 countries.

Millennials made up most of Chinese travellers' bookings on Airbnb, with 80% made by people born in the 1980s and 1990s.

Some 60% of reservations were made by groups of three or more travellers.

"Known for their welcoming hospitality, passionate Thais have become the forefront of an important type of tourism that is people-driven, local, authentic and sustainable," said Mich Goh, Airbnb's head of public policy for Southeast Asia. "Airbnb is focused on promoting a more healthy form of tourism that empowers local Thai host communities and helps drive economic activity into neighbourhoods that our hosts call home."

Despite the large number of Airbnb users in Thailand, renting out private residences for less than a month without a hotel licence is illegal in Thailand, and some Airbnb hosts have faced heavy fines for operating without a licence.
