A new president of Chulalongkorn University's Student Council has been elected.

The new president definitely heralds something new that has not been seen before, or at least for a very long time.

Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal, 21, is an active campaigner for reform in old traditions and rules.

He advocates giving students a choice rather than making rules mandatory

He won 27 of 36 votes from the representatives of the faculties on Thursday.

Winds of change appear to be blowing at Chulalongkorn University.

ABOUT TIME THAT THAILAND'S EDUCATION SYSTEM MOVED FORWARD

Mr Netiwit, a political science student, said in an interview on Facebook Live he was glad to have been elected.

He also said that he believed it was about time Thailand's education system moved forward as the country remained in a dictatorial grip.

"I'm ready to act as a model so that Chula's student council sets an example for youth councils all over the country," he said.

REFORM OF UNIVERSITY HAZING: REDUCE VIOLENCE

The first thing he would do after taking the position on June 1 is to reform university hazing and reduce violence.

"The rights of juniors [lower class students such as freshmen] must be respected."

"Seniors must not oppress juniors,"

SPECIAL PROSTRATION-FREE ZONE

On prostrating before images, he said those who didn't want to do so must have some space and be allowed to stand while paying respects.

He also pledged to listen to all voices at Chula -- from students and lecturers to management -- regardless of what they feel about him.

Mr Netiwit, who describes himself as a "conscientious objector" , is one of the few youths who campaign for reform of established rules or traditions including mandatory military conscription in Thailand.

He also campaigns for democracy, freedom of speech and the right to bail for all.

SKYPE SEMINAR WITH HONG KONG STUDENT LEADER LAST YEAR

In October 2016, Mr Netiwit invited Hong Kong student leader Joshua Wong for talks at Chula but Mr Wong was barred from entering the country.

The Hong Kong activist ended up joining the seminar through Skype in the evening.
