Easy fishing in Hua Hin

PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN: Hua Hin residents enjoyed a great day's fishing on Sunday - without even going out to sea.

Numerous fish, crabs and other marine life were found floating near the beach between the trawler pier and Royal Queen's Park in Hua Hin district and prompted people from the resort town and nearby locations to flock to the area with nets and any other fishing equipment they could get their hands on. Some even filled up their small boats ashore.

On the beach with his net, Amporn Innahai from Ban Samor Prong said he rushed to the sea in the morning after getting a phone call from his friend about this rare opportunity.

Mr Amporn proudly displayed his catch, including a two-kilogramme catfish and more than 10 kilogrammes of other species, including blue crabs.

"All that came from only two catches," he said. "I will keep some and give the rest to my relatives. They are perfect for cooking, because they're all fresh from the sea."

Other fish found swimming near the surface included parrot, black sea bass and paradise threadfin.

Marine conservation volunteers alerted the Marine and Coastal Resources Department about what happened.

Deputy department director-general Sophon Thongdee said that after studying the pictures sent by the volunteers, researchers had concluded that it was a natural occurrence.

Fish and other marine resources came up to the surface close to the beach for oxygen after an unusually high volume of fresh water from rainfall ran into the sea, he said. The marine life had difficulty breathing, as the influx of fresh water left sediment at sea, forcing them into shallow areas to be able to breathe, the official explained.

Mr Sophon expected the phenomenon will last for a few days before the ecology returns to normal.

Rain, sometimes heavy, has hit Hua Hin and other areas over the past few days.
