Supporters of the yellow-shirt People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) have started to gather outside the parliament building to protest against the government's effort to amend the 2007 constitution.
PAD coordinator Suriyasai Katasila said at the rally site that the meeting point is in front of the parliament on Uthong Nai road. About 10,000 people are expected to join the protest.
"The yellow shirts will not block the entrance to the parliament and we'll not spend a night here," Mr Suriyasai said. "But we are not yet certain whether the roads around the parliament will be closed during the rally."
PAD core member Chamlong Srimuang said after arriving at the rally that the yellow shirts will not use loudspeakers but will use megaphones instead.
Maj Gen Chamlong said the situation should be under control.
"The PAD wants the parliament to reject all the proposed charter changes. The charter can be amended but there must be a referendum first," he said.
The government has proposed two major changes to the constitution.
One is an amendment to Section 190, which requires that any treaty or international agreement which affects sovereignty, has "extensive impacts on national economic or social security" or commits the country to international trade and investment be approved by parliament.
The other concerns the election of MPs. The constitution now provides for multi-seat constituencies but the government coalition wants to adopt a single-seat constituency system.
