There is some new information this morning.  Aekawit Thongdeevorakul, a fourth-year architecture student at Chulalongkorn University, admitted to posting the messages on Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra’s twitter account, but, according to ICT Minister Anudith Nakornthap, he was not the person who hacked into the system to gain the PM's password.

ICT officials said the personal password to Ms Yingluck's gmail account had been hacked on Sept 30 by unknown people.

The password was then disseminated within the underground hacker community, and later picked up by Mr Aekawith, who then used the information to gain access to Ms Yingluck's Twitter account.

When the ICT Ministry received information the Twitter account had been hijacked by unknown people, it coordinated with Google to trace the computers used to access Ms Yingluck's gmail account.

On Monday, authorities received information regarding Mr Aekawit's IP address, the 12-digit number used by all computers linked to the internet. The address was linked to an internet account operated by True Corp, which was able to trace the account registration to Mr Aekawit's home in Hat Yai.

Mr Aekawit disseminated the posts from a residence at Pratunam in Bangkok.

He confirmed that the hacked account did indeed belong to the prime minister and only one other member of her team knew the password. Obviously, the hacker must be Thai, because the eight tweets he/she made were in the Thai language. Mr Anudith said additional clues as to the identity of the hacker had come in but he could not reveal them at this time.

“Hacked, account suspended”

Visitors to @PouYingluck, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra's personal Twitter account, were greeted this morning with a short announcement: "Account suspended."

A message on her popular Facebook page (almost 400,000 "likes") explained why. "Let it be known that Twitter @PouYingluck has been hacked. The current information there was not posted by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra."

The 29,000 followers of Ms Yingluck's Twitter feed were greeted Sunday morning with seven posts that belittled her government and its policies.

"Even my Twitter account can't be protected. So how will we protect the country?" one tweet said.

"What opportunities do the poor really have?," asked another. "We are deceiving the poor. We are giving them hope to gain their votes so that our [cronies] can benefit."

"Still another questioned her promise to give tablet computers to schoolchildren, saying it was no substitute for education reform."

Authorities vowed to prosecute those guilty of the hacking

Information and Communication Technology Minister Anudith Nakornthap said an investigation found the hacker used a prepaid phone card and an iPhone to access the accounts. He said further details would be released today.

Meanwhile, Government spokesman Prompong Nopparit blamed "influential figures" for working to discredit the government.

He said there was a nine-point conspiracy to unsettle the government. It consisted of constant media attacks to discredit the government's policies, sympathetic civil servants obstructing policy implementation and calls for civic groups and non-government organisations to protest against the ruling coalition.

"They are also using media under their control, in addition to social networks, to push the claim that Ms Yingluck's sole aim is to help [her elder brother and ousted prime minister] Thaksin [Shinawatra]," Mr Prompong announced.

He added that the efforts amounted to a plan to overthrow the country's democratic system. He did not elaborate on the identities of the so-called conspirators.
