Chuvit links casino to the 'man in Dubai'

4/07/2012

Rak Thailand Party leader Chuvit Kamolvisit claims the owner of a casino on Phetchaburi Road, which he was blocked from trying to visit, has close links to the relatives of "the one living in Dubai."

On Monday, Mr Chuvit and a group of supporters and reporters were blocked by a large group of residents as they tried to enter Soi Kingphet.

Mr Chuvit told reporters yesterday that the casino he tried to visit was known among gamblers as Kingphet casino and it was located on Phetchaburi Soi 5, or Soi Kingphet.

Prior to his trip to the casino, he had received complaints from people who wanted him to find out why the illegal casino was allowed to operate, Mr Chuvit said.

Some of the residents threatened a reporter from the INN news agency who had accompanied him and forced the reporter to delete footage recorded at the area, he said.

Mr Chuvit said the casino's owner has ties to the relatives of "the man who now lives in Dubai", a likely reference to former premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

He said he would like Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra - Thaksin's sister - to ask her relatives whether they know about the gambling den.

Mr Chuvit also showed pictures of people gambling in what he claimed was the Kingphet casino and said the photos were taken with a hidden camera on Monday night.

Metropolitan Police Bureau chief Kamronwit Thoopkrachang insisted there was no casino in the soi and urged members of the public to provide information about any casino they might know about.

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung said casinos had been around for a long time and despite police crackdowns they continued to operate.

These casinos had nothing to do with influential figures, however, as they had only opened in stealth.

Mr Chuvit said he was not surprised to hear Pol Lt Gen Kamronwit deny the existence of the Kingphet casino as police had never managed to actually find it.

He said he would hand evidence about the casino to city police today and would also use the same evidence in a new censure debate against the government.
