Four parties have joined together to donate 80 free prosthetic legs to disabled persons nationwide to celebrate the Queen's 80th birthday on Aug 12.

The legs, made of stainless steel weighing 1.9 kilogrammes, were jointly produced by the National Electronics and Computer Technology Centre, Sirindhorn National Medical Rehabilitation Centre, IT Project of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and Halcyon Metal Company.

The prosthetics, based on a four-joint knee mechanism, can help the disabled walk, take the stairs and even run, said Pairash Thajchayapong, vice-president of the IT Project of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

"This is the first sophisticated prosthetic leg made in Thailand,'' he said. They cost about 35,000 baht apiece, compared to 50,000 baht for imported varieties.

There are about 24,000 people in the country whose legs or a leg have been cut off above the knee. The major cause of these amputations is road accidents.

"Yuttana Namsaga, 47, a table-tennis player who will participate in the Paralympics in London, will be among the first who wear the new prosthetic legs. "I will wear it for the games in London. It can help improve my moves,'' he said.
