A visual guide to the rainy season in Thailand

Besides food, talking about the weather is probably one of the favourite topics of Bangkokians. And now that the harsh sun is being pushed out of the way to make room for rain clouds, everyone’s becoming a self-proclaimed meteorologist these days. Well, we hate to be left out of the conversation (even if it’s about something as boring as the climate) so here’s our visual guide on what to expect throughout the rainy season. And yes, that means sometimes you will find yourself standing in a downpour with only a soggy soi dog to keep you company. Here are some photos that show you what to expect:

You will see rain clouds, like this, appearing five minutes before you leave the office. Every. Single. Time.

Taxis, like this one, will never be present when you're caught in a torrential downpour. Then to add insult to injury, when you do hail a cab, they will refuse to go to your destination and splash you while driving away.

Prepare for that cringe-inducing squishy feeling between your toes as you walk through the water the whole miserable season. Don't be surprised if your shoes also somehow float away.

You will fall and slip into the water at some point. People will stare. You will feel embarrassed and come up with all sorts of new swear words.

A plastic bag over your head will be the fashion statement of the season. Better start getting your plastic bags ready now!

How is this cosplayer supposed to take a selfie in the rain? Oh, the injustice of this season!

Politics stop for no season, so don't expect things to magically wash away with the drizzle. The ominous thunder and lightning are proof of that.

You will inevitably get poked by one of these umbrellas. It will make you hate people.

You will see these ominous rainclouds posted all over your Facebook newsfeed followed by some poignant status like "Ugh!", "Rain again!" or "Here's a weather update since you obviously don't have the ability to look outside."

No matter how many rainy seasons you've survived, the sight of cars in the rain, backed up in a traffic jam, will never fail to evoke terror.
