Eurovision Song contest: The winners and their songs

Swedish singer Mans Zelmerlow won a narrow victory over Russia's Polina Gagarina in last night's Eurovision Song contest. I didn't watch but I was curious enough to check out both performances. (Videos included)

Eurovision Song contest: The winners and their songs

I don't follow the Eurovision Song contest, but I know it is extremely popular in European countries, so when I saw the headline "Sweden narrowly beats Russia in Eurovision", I was curious, so I skimmed through the first two paragraphs of the story:

"VIENNA, AFP – Swedish singer Mans Zelmerlow won a nail-biting 60th edition on Saturday of the Eurovision Song Contest, Europe's annual pop extravaganza, narrowly beating Russia.

"In Sweden's sixth victory – 41 years after national superstars ABBA won – Zelmerlow scored 365 points ahead of Russia's Polina Gagarina on 303."

Next came a visit to YouTube to check out the winning songs. Both were positive songs about being strong in the face of life's difficulties and overcoming our own problems with the help of friends.

During his winning performance, Mans Zelmerlow had a lot of help from his friends, interacting with a group of animated stick characters, even giving one of them a fist-bump.

Matt explained the idea behind song in an interview with Eurovisionplace News:

The story is based on my own experience in middle school when I was shut out by some friends because of a bully in my class. I had to find a new friend, and when fall came, he luckily even entered my class. His companionship gave me strength to confront the boy who had been bullying me, which also gave me my old friends back again. The animated figure “MP” (stands for Måns Petter) represents a young version of myself, and I represent that new friend I made who helped me stand up for myself.

Watch the song and then check out the lyrics below.

Don’t tell the gods I left a mess
I can’t undo what has been done
Let’s run for cover

What if I’m the only hero left?
You better fire off your gun
Once and forever

He said go dry your eyes
And live your life like there is no tomorrow, son
And tell the others

To go sing it like a hummingbird
The greatest anthem ever heard

We are the heroes of our time
But we’re dancing with the demons in our minds

We are the heroes of our time
Heroes, oh whoa…
But we’re dancing with the demons in our minds
Heroes, oh whoa…

We are the heroes of our time
Heroes, oh whoa…
But we’re dancing with the demons in our minds
Heroes, oh whoa…

The crickets sing a song for you
Don’t say a word, don’t make a sound
It’s life’s creation

I make worms turn into butterflies
Wake up and turn this world around
In appreciation

He said I never left your side
When you were lost I followed right behind
Was your foundation

Now go sing it like a hummingbird
The greatest anthem ever heard
Now sing together

We are the heroes of our time
Heroes, oh whoa…
But we’re dancing with the demons in our minds
Heroes, oh whoa…

We are the heroes
(We keep dancing with the demons)
(You could be a hero)

Now go sing it like a hummingbird
The greatest anthem ever heard
Now sing together

We are the heroes of our time
Heroes, oh whoa…
But we’re dancing with the demons in our minds
Heroes, oh whoa…

We are the heroes of our time
Heroes, oh whoa…
But we’re dancing with the demons in our minds
Heroes, oh whoa…

We are the heroes

Polina Gagarina

Polina Gagarina's song is more straightforward and easier to understand. Perhaps she would have won if she had some animated friends.

We are the worlds people

Different yet we're the same
We believe
We believe in a dream

Praying for peace and healing
I hope we can start again
We believe
We believe in a dream

So if you ever feel love is fading
Together like the stars in the sky
We can sing
We can shine

Chorus:
When you hear our voices call
You won't be lonely anymore
A million voices
Your heart is like a beating drum
Burning brighter than the sun
A million voices

Now as the world is listening
From cities and satellites
We believe
We believe
In a dream

If you ever feel love is fading
Together like the stars in the sky
We can sing
We can shine

Chorus:
When you hear our voices call
You won't be lonely anymore
A million voices
Your heart is like a beating drum
Burning brighter than the sun

Bridge:
When I look around at these faces
I can see the stars in the sky
We will sing
We will shine

Singing out
Singing out
ooh
Singing out
Singing out
ooh
Singing out
A million voices
