ROAD SAFETY & TOURIST SAFETY
Hit-and-Run not really hit-and-run: I told my police friend
On Saturday night on the island of Koh Samui, a man driving a truck ran over an Israeli tourist and fled from the scene.
In a low-quality video, it appears that the pickup truck knocks the man down and then drives over his head:
As for the excuse given for not stopping, the truck driver said he did not stop to help the injured man because he was afraid onlookers might attack him.
He turned himself in to police on Monday morning and claimed that he had contacted a police officer he personally knew so what he did was not really hit-and-run.
Despite his excuse, the driver was charged with hit-and-run and reckless driving resulting in injury but was released immediately because living on Koh Samui, he was not considered a flight risk.
Miraculously, the Israeli tourist is still alive and recovering in the hospital on Koh Samui.
Netizens on social media were appalled by the whole incident, declaring: "They have to arrest this bastard. The authorities must get serious about traffic problems. Are they going to let Thailand become Deathland, full of accidents like this?"
