Vitamin D can heal damaged hearts

Vitamin D and the healthy heart was the focus of two studies presented at the American College of Cardiology conference in Chicago recently.

VITAMIN D & HEALTHY HEARTS

One study focused on two measures of vitamin D (total vitamin D, bioavailable vitamin D), which when too low can predict the likelihood of heart attack, stroke, heart failure or death.

Some 4,200 people aged 52 to 76 were studied. Most already had coronary artery disease (70 percent) and one quarter were diabetic.

DEPRESSION & HEALTHY HEARTS

Another study focused on depression, a known risk factor for heart attack, stroke and even death.

Taking steps to recover from depression and boost vitamin D levels may improve heart health.

Researchers studied a registry of more than 7,500 people and found when depressed patients get effective treatment, they can lower their risk of heart damage to the same level as a person who never suffered from depression.

Prompt, effective treatment of depression appears to improve the risk of poor heart health.

Those who remained depressed had higher rates of heart problems -- at a rate of about six percent, compared to around four percent of people without depression.

The key conclusion of the study is: If depression isn't treated, the risk of cardiovascular complications increases significantly.

The research for both studies was carried out at the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute in Salt Lake City led by Heidi May, a cardiovascular epidemiologist.

ADDITIONAL POINTS MADE BY BBC

The BBC provides a lot of useful background information about vitamin D in their article on vitamin D and the heart this week (see here):

1. Vitamin D is made in the skin when exposed to sunlight.

2. Vitamin D also comes from oily fish, eggs and is added to many so-called fortified foods such as breakfast cereals and milk.

3. Many people are deficient in Vitamin D (vitamin D deficiency), often because they do not get enough exposure to sunlight during the day.

4. The skin's ability to manufacture vitamin D also gets less effective with age.

5. Vitamin D supplements may help people with diseased hearts.

6. Vitamin D is important for healthy bones and teeth and is also believed to improve the hearts' ability to pump blood around the body.

WHAT FOODS HAVE VITAMIN D?

According to WebMD:

"Many of the foods we eat have no naturally occurring vitamin D. Fish such as salmon, swordfish, or mackerel is one big exception -- and can provide a healthy amount of vitamin D in one serving. Other fatty fish such as tuna and sardines have some "D," but in much lower amounts. Small amounts are found in egg yolk, beef liver, and fortified foods like cereal and milk. Cheese and ice cream do not usually have added vitamin D" (see here).
