Evening update: According to Post Today, a student from a well-known local school has admitted that he was the hacker. He met with Education Ministry permanent secretary Sasithara Phichaicharnnarong and said he was upset about the jit arsa programme (described in the story below). Ms Sasithara said that since the student was not an adult and had no intention of stealing information, he would not be charged with a crime. Instead, he will be asked to do community service, by helping in the Ministry's ICT department.
Education Ministry website hacked
The Education Ministry website seems to be working normally this morning, back to its rather boring look, typical of many government websites.
Late yesterday afternoon it was anything but boring. About 4:30 pm someone broke into the website and announced that it had been hacked.
The hacker gave the site a new logo and posted messages in Thai and English saying that the ministry should have no right to control teenagers.
“We’re Libertia," the Thai message said. "We do what we want to protect our freedom. You have no right to control teenagers like us. We have our own life and our own rules.”
The English version was not perfect, but it did get the message across: “We're Libertia. We do whatever we want, because we can. Don't dominant (dominate) your teenager. We have our life, We have our rules."
The hacker also left a message that said, “Hacked by Gleich zi Libertia. We don’t need you. Bring me democracy!” and criticised the ministry’s campaign to nurture the so-called jit arsa (volunteering spirit) among youth using foul language, saying it was useless.
The hacking caused the website to malfunction and the ministry’s IT and communications officials had to close it down at 5.20pm.
Education Ministry permanent secretary Sasithara Phichaicharnnarong admitted that the ministry’s IT security system had a major defect that left it vulnerable and it needed to be fixed.
Meanwhile, the message seems to be gaining some support among the young. There is already a Gleich zi Libertia Facebook fanpage with almost 2000 likes.
