SAMUT SONGKHRAM: A second body has been found in the Mae Klong river following the collapse of a busy waterside food pavilion in Muang district on Tuesday.

The body of Pornwilai Suealek, 24, was found trapped under debris at a corner of the submerged old food pavilion behind Wat Phet Samut Woravihan in tambon Mae Klong about 11am on Wednesday.

Her father Winai was among rescue workers at the scene. He said he had known his daughter planned to have lunch with a friend in the area, but was shocked to learn she was among the victims and was one of those missing.

The packed pavilion slid off the bank into the river about 12.45pm on Tuesday. Twenty people were rushed to hospital and three people - two women and a student -  were reported missing. The student was later found and treated in hospital.

Rescue workers found the body of Suree Urachuen, 37, at a corner of the pavilion about midnight.

The search for the second missing woman was halted about 4am and resumed about 8am on Wednesday.

Searchers were hampered by the strong river current, murky water and the totally submerged pavilion, with its stalls and merchandise.

The 50-year-old structure came to rest about six metres under water.

A similar pavilion on the riverbank alongside the collapsed food pier has been cordoned off for public safety.

Samut Songkhram deputy governor Prajin Tarasirisin confirmed late on Tuesday that two people were killed and 20 others were injured in the incident.
