Bangkok continues to fall apart
Bangkok is falling apart – or so it seems if you follow the news. There have been fires in poorly-protected high-rise buildings and, at ground level, highways and footpaths are collapsing.
In the latest incident, a section of a footpath on Rama III Road near Khlong Bang Khlo collapsed on Monday after land beneath it subsided after years of land erosion along the banks of the canal.
The subsidence, which took place late on Monday night, created a hole 3m deep, 5m wide and 22m long.
Thanes Weerasiri, secretary-general of the Engineering Institute of Thailand, said water had leaked from the main and washed soil from under the footpath into a nearby canal.
Without its soil foundations, the footpath between Rama III Road Soi 21 and Rama III Road Soi 23 collapsed.
Mr Thanes recommended that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration place sheet piles in the area to stop further erosion and rebuild a concrete embankment and the section of footpath which collapsed.
Deputy Bangkok Governor Thirachon Manomaipibul said recent renovations of the footpath’s surface also might have contributed to the collapse.
Mr Thirachon said he had told City Hall’s engineers to revise guidelines on renovating footpaths, especially for those near waterways, to make sure the work observes sound engineering principles and the public is safe from any subsidence.
