Kitty fights back

Back in 2012, one of Kamikaze’s popular girl groups was Kiss Me Five. They released several hit singles before going their separate ways. One of the girls, Chicha Amatayakul (Kitty), now has a successful showbiz career as a model, TV show host and actress.

After supporting roles in several films, TV dramas and sitcoms, the 24-year-old is now ready for the lead role in GMM25’s new teen supernatural thriller Dek Mai (Girl From Nowhere). Directed by Komgrit Triwimol, the show deals with difficult topics, such as dysfunctional families, mental illness, teen sex, bullying and death. Check it out every Wednesday night at 10 pm on GMM25.

Kitty plays Nanno, a new student in a high school. She’s pretty and quickly becomes popular. All the boys fancy her. But some students get jealous and make evil plans. They rape and kill her, then she returns from the dead.

S Weekly recently caught up with Kitty to talk about Girl From Nowhere and her plans for the future.

Is Nanno a ghost?

Kitty: No, but she isn’t really human. She’s like the daughter of Satan or the snake from the Garden of Eden who comes to Earth to give forbidden fruit to humans. She’s here to test how evil humans can be.

Was it difficult to play the role?

Kitty: I found it very challenging. It took me a long time to understand the character and portray her in a believable way. She isn’t human so she doesn’t have feelings like empathy or guilt. I had to use my imagination to figure out how somebody like that would behave.

Was it your first time playing the lead character?

Kitty: I played the lead in the Channel 3 drama Chao Phraya a long time ago. But I’m much prouder of my role in this show. Girl From Nowhere has such a unique story - something completely new for a Thai TV show. It’s brave in the way it looks at topics like teenage problems and school bullying. There’s also an element of feminism. Women are no longer willing to be victims and are prepared to fight back.

Did you have any bad experiences in high school?

Kitty: I went to an international school when I was little, so I grew up mainly using English. Later on, when I moved to a state school, I had to adjust to a new culture and environment. I used to switch between English and Thai all the time and the other kids teased me for it.

What kind of student were you at high school?

Kitty: I misbehaved a lot. I liked to sleep during class. [Laughs.]

How do you spend your free time?

Kitty: I like to read. I’m a fan of suspense and thriller novels, especially by Japanese author Haruki Murakami.

Have you thought about getting back into singing?

Kitty: Yes, I hope to do it soon. I’ve been talking to Grammy about doing a new solo music project. I can’t say much about it right now because it’s still a secret. But it will be something very different from what I did with Kiss Me Five.
