Learning Thai: Children keep masked dance alive (video)

Here's a challenge for learners of Thai (or English). The video contains spoken language; it's rather fast and a bit longer than usual. However, it is fun, interesting and a great example of the preservation of Thai culture.

The Khon Master

Chucheep Khunart

The Khon master

(Sound of a flute and xylophone)  OK, everyone in the audience. You are going to see a Khon performance featuring the section (of the Ramakien) called "The Battle (Yok rop)" between Tosakan and Rama. Here they come. Here Rama is moving his troops...

Now, I've been teaching khon since 1999 or 2000. I want to teach/train young people who lack opportunities to understand the extent of the difficulties involved with the words "artist" and "art" and which may not have much longer to exist.

Most of the students I teach are from from the nearby communities. Some are orphans, some are not. Some are poor. I'd like to help these children to learn, whether they are rich or poor.

The method of teaching – Khon has stages beginning at the fundamental or elementary level. First are the bending angles, meaning bending the fingers, bending the feet, bending the arms to make them flexible.  And, we teach them the basic postures/positions – called the "mother postures" until they have the full set of basic Khon positions, then we give them information about the story that goes together with the positions.

We have to feed them a lot of information. It's like their studies, they have to know their A, B, C's. They have to learn/know which letters are which. It's the same. Is it difficult? Yes, it is, but the children can do it.

Young girl student: When I first began to learn, I felt it was a little difficult but after I began to get used to it, I felt it was not difficult. I feel I am developing continually. I hope that Thai art and culture will be preserved and that it won't be allowed to disappear from the country. This art form is of a high level of skill and I don't want it to be abandoned.

Teacher: In the future for these children, they will pass on Thai culture. They will learn about virtue, ritual and gain self-confidence. And they are able to become teachers in the future. They get the knowledge from us from which they can teach. They are able to work, even at an old age, when they become elderly. At the age of 60, we have to retire, but with Khon there is no retirement age.

These students, after they are skilled, are able to work anywhere, to earn money to lessen the financial burden on their parents and families. But for my own future, I want to devote it to the children. Children have their dreams and I am happy. I have happiness.

As for my future, I can live or die. That is not important. What is important is that I will teach until my last breath.

This Khon performance featuring the episode "The Battle (Yok rop)" has now ended amid the enjoyment of the children. Ladies and Gentlemen, this has just been a little performance. Goodbye.
