Taiwan seeks arts and crafts inroad

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Taiwan's premium arts and crafts have in the last couple of years been making inroads into the local Thai market, making the Taiwan Excellent Crafts exhibition, held at River City Bangkok, from Wednesday until Aug 31, a much-anticipated event.

Since 2003, the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute (NTCRI) has been promoting a national-certification system for their arts-and-craft pieces. The aim is to select those that best represent Taiwan, screen products for consumers, and boost the development of the art industry.

The NTCRI, a participant at last year's trade show and cultural exchange in Thailand, now has a broader understanding of the demands of Thailand's arts-and-crafts market as well as Thai art consumers' expectations.

For this year's exhibition, the NTCRI has selected 20 participants with 35 pieces of top-notch Taiwanese arts and crafts, with categories including metalwork, indigo dyeing, wood art, lacquer art, pottery, stone carving and more.

The list of this year's participants includes the likes of Tianguan Silver Cap, whose designs turn deities' crowns into à la mode arts-and-crafts pieces; Natural Color, an avid advocate of infusing indigo dyeing into lifelike pieces, creating a line of naturally dyed products; and Chaiwood, a brand mixing leather and woodcraft and utlising the unique technique of sewing leather onto wood by hand.

Thanks to the exhibition, these brands are given a chance to connect to Thailand and the Thai market and to raise brand awareness in the Kingdom.

It is a sure-fire assessment that Taiwan's premium arts and crafts will etch deeply into the Thai market after this.

Taiwan's ambassador to Thailand, Tong Zhen-Wen, said Taiwanese premium arts and crafts are quite astonishing, and all pieces showcase their creators' refined craftsmanship and special designs.

He said Taiwanese arts and crafts are all worthy of being recommended to all sectors in Thailand, and exhibiting these pieces in local Thai shops might help open new channels and create business opportunities that make it easier for the products to make inroads into overseas markets.
