The Sriburapha-award-winning author Wat Wallayangkoon has passed away at 67 in France.
Wajana Wallayangkoon, the late author's daughter, yesterday posted on her Facebook account that he passed away at around 9.30pm on Monday in France due to a critical health condition.
Born on Jan 12, 1955, in Lop Buri, Wat loved writing. During college, he worked as a columnist, reporter, documentary writer and novelist.
Wat was widely known among the October Uprising movement. After the Thammasat Massacre on Oct 6, 1976, he fled Bangkok and hid in a forest where he composed short stories, novels and poems.
After the political situation had stabilised, he worked as a newspaper columnist.
One of Wat's beloved works is Mon Rak Transistor (Transistor Love Story) which was adapted into a film in 2001 that many cite as one of the most important films in Thai cinematic history. He won the Sriburapha Award in 2007.
He was charged with lese majeste after the National Council for Peace and Order staged the coup in May 2014. He fled to Cambodia and Laos before moving to France in 2019.
