Screening of old films at BACC

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

The Thai Film Archive organises a screening every Tues, Wed and Thurs at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), with a mix of both old and new Thai films, as well as a programme of international cinema. The screening is free and takes place in the screening room on the 4th floor. With this temporary auditorium located at the convenient location right in the heart of Pathumwan district, the Film Archive can now deflect some of the complaints its headquarters in Salaya (which has a much better screening environment, though) received for being too far and too inconvenient, especially for movie fans who do not drive.

Today at 6pm, the 1969 Thai film Muang Mae Mai (City of Widows) will be screened. Directed by the legendary Tae Prakratwuttisarn, this film has such an eccentric plot to contemporary viewers, though it was taken seriously back in those days. Starring the brightest constellation of that era _ Sombat Methanee, Aranya Namwong, Metta Rungrat, Wilailan Watanapanich and Ruj Ronnaphob _ the film tells the story of a group of male archaeologists who come into possession of a treasure map.

Following the clue, they end up in the City of Widows, a lost world populated only by fierce women (they're not necessarily widows by the way). As expected, the men are overjoyed, thinking that they will now live a happy life among these beautiful creatures. But soon it dawns on them that the women, ruled by a powerful dowager, have another darker, more sinister plan for them.
