Neilson Hays Library presents "Beethoven, Debussy And Beagles", an evening of music with Pro Musica Ensemble, which will take place on July 18 at 7.30pm.
The programme features Claude Debussy's Syrinx, a short piece for solo flute usually included in any flautist's repertoire. It was composed in 1913 as an incidental musical piece for a play.
In Greek mythology, Syrinx was a beautiful wood nymph pursued by the god Pan. To escape him, she ran to the river and asked the river nymphs for help. They transformed her into hollow water reeds. Pan, hearing the haunting sound of the wind blowing through the reeds, cut them to make musical pipes.
Next on the programme is Bebop For Beagles, a jazzy suite for violin and viola by Benedikt Brydern, an award-winning composer for film and the concert hall. Written as a tribute to a couple's pet beagles, the mini-suite consists of seven movements with Hoover's Holiday, Cookies In Space, Flea Control: Mission Impossible, The Kitchen Blues and others.
The evening will conclude with Beethoven's Serenade For Flute, Violin And Viola In D Major. Written around 1801, it's a very light and entertaining piece, more like earlier salon music than the music Beethoven was composing at the time.
Performing on the night will be Anna Takeda (violin) and Tasana Nagavajara (viola). They will be accompanied by the winning flautist at the Pro Musica Chamber Music Competition 2024.
Tickets cost 900 baht (800 baht for library members and 200 baht for students) and can be purchased from neilsonhayslibrary.org and at the library. Seats are limited.
