Textile artworks created from upcycled materials are showcased during "Misfit" at Four Seasons Art Space by Moca Bangkok, Four Seasons Hotel, Charoen Krung Road, until Oct 13.
The exhibition showcases the journey of Ploenchan Vinyaratn, widely known as Mook, a textile artist who first gained popularity in Thai society for her innovative commercial woven designs.
Her journey from a Catholic primary school to boarding school in England, through university at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, up amongst hilltribes in northern Thailand, and finally within the often insular contemporary art sphere, has been a relentless quest for self-expression.
Her longtime use of upcycled materials fits within the growing movement of eco-conscious art practices, where sustainability and environmental awareness are paramount. By repurposing textiles and other waste materials, she challenges the disposable nature of consumer culture.
Also, her focus on intricate patterns and techniques resonates with the resurgence of craft in contemporary art, merging traditional methods with a modern aesthetic.
This integration of craft and fine art questions and blurs conventional boundaries, creating pieces that are visually striking and rich in cultural references. The works on display in this exhibition are not merely art objects but narrative threads woven from the texture of the artist's personal journey. The intricate patterns and experimental techniques -- featuring her signature use of upcycled materials -- echo a history of defiance against traditional boundaries and aesthetic norms.
Each piece represents a milestone chapter of her creative journey -- a complex interplay of rejection and rebellion brought to tactile life.
The exhibition is open for public viewing daily from 10.30am to 7.30pm. There is no admission fee.
